Science, generally

    U.S. Government Research:

  • Science.gov - Portal to U.S. government research; search multiple federal databases at once. Alerts available.
  • Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) - Research done for the Dept. of Defense. Unclassified material is available through the Public STINet (Scientific and Technical Information Network) service
  • Federal R&D project Summaries
  • National Academies Press - Publishes reports by the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine — many of them available in full text.
  • National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - Technical publications from government agencies, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Web database goes back only to 1990, so e-mail or call for publications older than that.
    • U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI):

Although these services come from the Dept. of Energy, all of them cover a wider range of scientific literature than just energy.

    • E-print Network - Portal for e-print sites
    • GrayLIT Network - Database of federally funded technical reports, including the DOE Information Bridge (below), DTIC reports (Dept. of Defense), EPA reports, and NASA reports
    • Information Bridge - Database of DOE research in full text (mostly from 1995 on)
    • See also Energy Index, below
